A Chinese soapstone pailou or gateway, formed as four pillars inscribed with calligraphy, surmounted by reticulated panels and pagoda style roofs, 19th century, 41.5cm.
Pailou, or three-arched gateways, were erected to commemorate local heroes or events, which were named in placards above the arches.
