One of the highlights of the Fine Chinese Paintings & Works of Art sale on Tuesday 27th July is a set of four rare Chinese porcelain plaques (lot 9) by the celebrated Republic Period artist Wang Qi (1884-1937). Wang Qi is known for his distinctive portrayal of folkloric figures and is widely regarded as one of the most outstanding porcelain painters of his time. These four plaques are dated to 1931 and depict the poet Li Bai, the vanquisher of ghosts Zhong Kui, the Daoist Immortal Li Tieguai and an unnamed seated scholar.

The sale will also feature an impressive Qianlong period blue and white moonflask (lot 191) decorated with a large confronting dragon in flight above a smaller beast emerging from the sea. The flask was in an English private collection in the 1940s and has since been passed down through the family.

Other highlights from the sale include a Qianlong mark and period jade fanggu from the Plesch Collection purchased at Spink & Son in 1981 (lot 53), a rare Imperial bronze acupuncture figure (lot 58), a Kangxi period hongmu altar table purchased from Nicholas Grindley in 1986 (lot 38), and a selection of Imperial porcelain, including a Daoguang mark and period iron-red ‘dragon’ wine cup (lot 190).
