A CHINESE JADE TWIN FISH DOUBLE SNUFF BOTTLE
LATE 17TH/EARLY 18TH CENTURY
The stone of a greyish celadon colour, with brown inclusions, finally carved as two carp arranged head to tail with lotus and waterweed streaming from their mouths, 8cm.
Provenance: an English private collection, purchased from Robert Kleiner & Co. Ltd., 25th October 2003, a copy of the invoice is available.
The motive of twin fish denotes a happy marriage, fish eggs are a symbol of many offspring and when combined with aquatic plants they express the hope for the early arrival of offspring.
