An unusual Chinese xipi lacquer box Kangxi 1662-1722

£1,000 - £2,000 £1,000

An unusual Chinese xipi lacquer box Kangxi 1662-1722, the rectangular form with a hinged lid and brass mounts, a scrolling fitting to the front and loose handles to each end, 15.9cm x 36.2cm.

The term 'xipi' literally means rhinoceros skin; it describes a type of lacquer where the pattern was made by applying successive layers of different colours on a base of raised moulded lacquer. It is then polished flat to reveal the nodular pattern.
