A TALL KOREAN SANGGAM INLAID CELADON EWER
KORYO DYNASTY, 12TH/13TH CENTURY
The bottle of double-gourd form with a narrow waist and tapered neck, a long curved spout and slender handle; decorated in slip inlays with circular panels enclosing flowers underneath a band of ruyi heads and cranes in flight; with extensive gold lacquer restoration; two paper labels underneath, one reading 'the Stanley Smith Collection 1914' and another for the 'Oriental Green Wares Exhibition, BM/OCS/1997 no.82', 35cm.

Provenance: from the collection of Phillip Allen (1938-2022). Previously in the collection of Rev Stanley Smith (1876-1954), who served as missionary in Korea with the English Church Mission (1912-17). Part of his collection is now at the British Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum.
