LATE MING DYNASTY
With his right hand in bhumisparsa and his left hand holding a jewel, he wears long flowing robes with a bare chest and exposed feet, his face with downcast eyes beneath an urna, his hair an intricate mass of tight curls, raised on a stylised lotus base, the reverse with a square four character seal mark which reads Sun Jiang shan ren, 43.2cm.
Cf. A similar figure with the mark Zhang Shoushan, now in the British Museum, is illustrated in M Medley, The World's Great Collections Vol.6, The Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, London, 1982, no.205, collection no.414. For another comparable example sold at auction see Christie's London, 3rd November 2009, no.306, p.194.
The four-character seal mark Sun Jiang shan ren 'The Hermit Sun Hui Jiang' is recorded by P J Donnelly, Blanc de Chine under Potter's Marks, Fancy Names, F8.b, p.359, where he illustrates a figure of Guanyin with the same mark. A seated figure of Buddha with the same mark, from the collection of E T Chow was sold by Sotheby's, Hong Kong, The Edward T Chow collection Part Three, Ming and Qing Porcelain, 19th May 1981, no.641.
