A GOOD TIBETAN GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF AVALOKITESHVARA
17TH/18TH CENTURY

Seated in dhyanasana, wearing an elaborate crown, earrings and bracelets, inset with turquoise beads, he has a serene expression and downcast eyes and holds his hands before his chest, while another holds a lotus stem, the hair with traces of blue pigments, the base crisply carved with a band of lotus, the copper base plate engraved with a visvavajra, 883g, 13.5cm.

Provenance: the collection of Miss Elizabeth Augusta Grosvenor Guest (1879-1960), grand-daughter of Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster (1795-1869), and grand-daughter of Lady Charlotte Guest (later Schreiber, 1812-95).
