A MASSIVE CHINESE BRONZE LION DOG INCENSE BURNER

LATE MING/EARLY QING DYNASTY

Cast seated on his haunches, the head attached with a hinge, turned to the side with a menacing expression and flopping ears, with one paw resting on a reticulated ball entangled in a ribbon with tassels, one end in the beast's mouth, together with a wood plinth, 83cm x 95cm, in excess of 100kg. (3)

Provenance: from the collection of Edward and Julia Carter Preston, sold on behalf of The Hope Carter Preston Foundation, Liverpool. Edward Carter Preston (1885-1965) was a renowned Liverpool artist, sculptor and medalist, his daughter Julia Carter Preston (1926-2012) was a successful potter.
