A TIBETAN THANGKA OF THREE GODS

C.18TH CENTURY

Depicting Red Hayagriva in his dharmapala form above dharmapala Vajrapani and Garuda, the King of Birds, the foreground painted with an array of offerings to the deities, 34cm x 24.5cm.

This rare thangka composition is known as 'Ta Chag Khyung Sum' or 'Three Gods'. Thangkas of this type are used in a special empowerment ritual which helps to remove illness, emotional disturbance and harmful spirits through a mantra combining the methods of Vajrapani, Hayagriva and Garuda.
