Antarctic, Charles X, Dumont d'Urville's Voyage of the Corvette Astrolabe to New Zealand and the Antarctic, 1826.
50 mm bronze medal, by F. Depaulis, listing the patrons of the expedition.
From 1822 - 1842, Lieut. d'Urville circumnavigated the world three times as executive officer on the Coquille during the South Seas expeditions, afterwards publishing a volume on the flora of the Falkland Islands. From 1826 - 29, he commanded the Astrolabe tasked with augmenting the scientific knowledge amassed on the previous expedition. In his official instructions to d'Urville in 1826, Secretary of the Navy Comet de Charbol wrote: '30 silver and 450 bronze medals struck to commemorate the Astrolabe expedition to distribute in the countries you visit and wherever you deem it useful to leave some mark of your passage.'
